Some people think tomatoes are simple living things. Well, thatâs not what pupils who came to the microscope competition would tell you.
As part of our Science Week celebrations, pupils were given the chance to explore the microscopic world with the Collegeâs new digital microscope. Set with the challenge of making the perfect microscope slide of tomato tissue, the pupils beavered away hoping to be crowned the Microscope Queen and win the coveted Axolotl Trophy.
Microscopes open our eyes to a hidden world, and this was certainly the case as the pupils explored their specimens to search for cells and cellular contents, such as the nucleus containing DNA. Complete with a screen that allows the whole class to view specimens at once, our new microscope allowed pupils to explore the tomato world in a new way, revealing to them what can, at times, seem rather mysterious. The competition was an exciting way to launch the new microscope, which is something we are looking forward to using across the year groups.
As for the winning specimen? Well, in a scientific endeavour, everyone is a winner!
