British Science Week At QCL

To celebrate British Science Week, the science department hosted a series of exciting workshops and talks centred around the theme of ‘Change and Adapt.’

This theme is particularly relevant today, given the ongoing environmental challenges we face. Science author, Lewis Dartnell, kicked off the week with a truly inspiring talk, offering hands-on advice on how to use science to rebuild civilization (if we ever need to). During assembly, our science teachers were brave and took on the QCL Earthshot Challenge, presenting their global project ideas to pupils, who then voted on who should receive the ‘£1 million’ prize – it was a close call!

Dr Davies led a ‘build a slide’ workshop where pupils were given the opportunity to use our brand new, high-tech microscope. He also shared his expert insights during a talk on the evolution of dwarf elephants.

In Ms Phillimore’s Science Club, pupils had a live chat with AI Charles Darwin and asked him a series of insightful questions. The week concluded with a Science Fair in the Main corridor and Waiting Room, featuring pupil-created displays on topics such as Mars colonization, a scientific vocabulary quiz, and an ‘insect’ yoga session.

Meanwhile, pupils took on Miss Frasinescu’s Taskmaster challenge, which involved building a working chain reaction machine that ended with a popping balloon! A big thank you to everyone who made this week such a success and engaged so well with all the activities on offer.

If you’re interested in attending the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures 2025 (to be televised), more information can be found HERE. We are very excited to hear who the speaker will be this year, as she is a great inspiration to us all!
